Quick Tips  on Job Search

Searching for a job is a momentous event.

All jobs are not advertised on job portals; uncountable jobs are found through direct contact with employers or through personal/social networks.

Resources

• Check the latest expos, events and programs on our website.
• Use employment-related services www.graduatecareers.com.au
• Jobs database for Australian students and graduates www.careerhub.com.au, www.jobsearch.gov.au
• Career resource books covering profiles of people working in different jobs, particulars of how to find work in those domains and to get appropriate contacts.
• Follow the tips and ideas about careers at www.jobjumpstart.gov.a

Networking

Communicate with friends, relatives and other reliable contacts about your job search. Participate in industry networking events, employer expos, work placements and work as a volunteer to increase the network.
Everyone cannot give you a job, but they could give you referral names, advice or insight into company or profession.
Some ideas for networking are:
• Register your pertinent Professional Organization and attend events to know colleagues better, interact with competitors and build relationships with potential mentors.
• Be in touch with your lecturers and tutors after you graduate as they often have good contacts.
• Stay in touch with people you meet via your network/placement/internship/ education.
• Follow Quick Tips for Networking to improve your network.

Application and interview process

Many opportunities are lost because of improper job search and interview skills. You must develop skills in all these areas to get an excellent possibility of searching and getting the relevant job.
• Attend job events and workshops to improve your interview skills.
• Get self motivated as most of your dream jobs may not be advertised and may be through referrals only.
Job search must be started before the completion of the course as advertising and hiring for graduate positions starts well in advance before the actual joining date.
